How I Lost My Virginity [Roller Derby]

by adesalvo 5. January 2009 05:33

Jan 3rd 2009 my wife and I shipped the kids off to the parents house and headed off to buffalo for a QCRD Roller Derby Match in our neighboring city Buffalo NY. We decided to check out the event because my wife plays on the Rochester RCRD team and is playing in a match in buffalo on January 24th. Being a "Derby Virgin"as I was called by some of her teammates I didn’t know what to expect from a roller derby match. I am not sure how long the Buffalo QCRD club has being putting on these events but they sure did it in a very professional manner. The roller derby girls seemed to span the spectrum of types and personalities but they all had one thing in common, they were all tough as nails.

The event "The Ice Breaker" was held at the RAINBOW RINK, 101 Oliver St, N. Tonawanda. It was the first match of the QCRD season.

Upon arrival I was taken off guard by the line down the street. In buffalo derby is a big draw. After waiting in the "Will Call" Line we entered the building. The neon "Rainbow Rink" hovered above the oval shape track. The crowd was a great mix of indie hipsters, metal heads, jocks, and 40+. We decided to sit in the second row of turn 2 with the rest of the Rochester team, the first row is reserved for premium ticket holders. Little did I know that the premium ticket holders would have their fair share of flying bodies ramming into them. We sucked down some Canadian draft beers and then the introductions started.

There were 2 very good mc's for the night. Their responsibility was to hype the crowd, introduce the teams, and announce the play by play. Over all they did a great job, they also explained the rules and penalties that were handed out by the referee’s. During the Introduction of the teams 3 large projectors displayed the derby names as they entered the track. My favorite name was Little Orphan Angry! After the announcements the score board and match times were displayed on all three screens which made it easy for a "virgin" to understand what was going on.

During the match I found my self so sucked into the match I wasn't cheering loud as the people around me. A few things I noticed right away was how fast paced the game was and how hard the girls were hitting each other. A couple girls fell pretty hard and others were rammed very hard into the premium seat holders. During half time one of the sponsors "Al Cohen's New York Rye" threw about 50 loafs of bread into the crowd. The video is below..

My wife is playing the newest team in buffalo on January 24 at the same rink in buffalo, RAINBOW RINK, 101 Oliver St, N. Tonawanda. If you are planning on attending here are a few tips. Buy your ticket pre-sale, all the events sell out. Show up 15 min prior to the doors opening. Even if you bought tickets your going to have a hard time finding a seat if you are late. Only purchase the premium seats if you want people flying into you.
